Derek is a Crate Sprint driver who began racing in 2017 but before then, started racing in the thunderstock class at Ohsweken Speedway. Although known as a two-time Juno-Award winning musician from Six Nations, Derek is a racer at heart with a deep passion for all forms of motorsports. Before Derek got into a car, he had much to overcome, having developed some fear of speed since his father died in a car wreck. He later discovered that his grandfather was a board track racer in Midget cars, which was an extremely dangerous form of racing. And his late father had been a car-obsessed wrench and wheel-man that had a very storied reputation at Six Nations. Armed with the knowledge that he is a third generation racer, Derek began taking on racing with passion and dedication. 2019 marks his second full season in the crate sprint car and he embarks on it while also touring with his band and undertaking other projects. It’s no easy feat for him to get back to the rez to get his car on the track, but somehow, he makes it happen, against the predictions of the other drivers in his pit row. One thing is for certain, Derek can entertain on the oval just as well as he entertains on stage.
